Introduction

Facing History and Ourselves is a course where history and the truth are combined to create a whirlwind of wonder and questions that may or may not have the ability to be answered. On a hasty glance it may seem like a group of teenagers are sitting their happy to have fifty-seven minutes to slack off during their long day as they watch films or read small packets. It gives them time to whisper to their friends or possibly take a nap. A person needs to stop and really notice what in reality is going on. You will in fact witness young adults who are just about to go out into the world for the first time, experience life in a way they never had before. Their eyes will take in images that can never be forgotten and their ears will engulf words that stir the mind and make them question everything they’ve learned. This class isn’t one to be taken lightly, yet at the same time it’s one every human needs to go through.
As a veteran of this course, I myself still don’t feel as if I’ve experienced it thoroughly. I have dug into the smallest percentage of information that it would take me years and most likely a lifetime to get past it all and truly take it in. It may even take longer. As one of those young adults who are just about to be sent out into the world, I will never regret the decision to sign up for this. It was, of course, completely voluntary on my part but that’s not a mistake. I remember reading the course description thinking that it’ll be oh so cool to learn more about the Holocaust, but who knew it would be so much more? I can’t explain that in detail because this is just something that you need to undergo by your own doing. It doesn’t matter who you are, how old you are, or where you come from, I just advise you to make this into something. I promise you won’t be disappointed.
